Shell Helps Make the Holiday Season Brighter in Martinez
Refinery is Lead Sponsor for the Annual Martinez Holiday Frolic and Snow Park; Employees Adopt more than 230 “Angels;”
Shell Volunteers Install Lights along Main Street and Clubhouse Provides a Colorful Holiday Display!!
MARTINEZ – The Shell Martinez Refinery has a strong tradition of supporting a wide variety of holiday activities in Martinez, including some that benefit the greater community of Contra Costa County. For some of these activities, the Refinery has partnered with the Shell Alumni and the Shell Martinez Catalyst Plant, such as the colorful display at the Shell Clubhouse on Pacheco Boulevard.
“Shell enjoys the holidays as much as anyone, and we like to help our community make the season as bright and happy as possible,” said Shell Martinez General Manager Paul Gabbard. “Our employees are very generous in giving their time and their talents to Martinez, and are even happier to do so as the current economic times continue to be challenging for so many. We want to wish all of our neighbors a safe and happy holiday season!”
This year, work started early so projects would be done before the Martinez celebration is in full swing with the upcoming Holiday Frolic and Snow Park on Fri., Dec. 2 through Sun., Dec. 4. Following is a list of Shell’s holiday projects and sponsorships:
Major Sponsorship – Holiday Frolic and Snow Park
Shell again is the presenting sponsor for the Main Street Martinez Annual Holiday Frolic and Snow Park. This fun combination of events includes lighting of the Tree of Spirit on Fri., Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Holiday Light Parade, and the arrival of the Martinez Santa. At approximately 6 p.m., Shell refinery leaders will flip the switch on the new LED lights they installed along Main Street. These lights will be lit throughout the year to give Downtown Martinez a festive glow.

Main Street Lights
Shell paid for and installed the new LED lights along Main Street. Volunteers from the refinery’s leadership team and the electrical and instrument team contributed more than 200 hours of time to install the lights in November. This was a joint project of the city of Martinez and Main Street Martinez.
Santa House Ramp
Shell coordinated, and Brand Scaffolding constructed a new ramp for the Martinez Santa House at Main Street Plaza. This was a joint project with the city of Martinez and Main Street Martinez.
Tree of Spirit
Volunteers from Shell Martinez Refinery and Contra Costa Electric teamed up to decorate the Tree of Spirit at Pine and Court Streets.
Lighting up the Town
Shell is also continuing its annual light display at the Shell Clubhouse, which is produced by the Shell Alumni. The annual lighting ceremony was held Nov. 28, and the decorations are on display for all to see throughout the holidays. The clubhouse is at Pacheco and Arreba Streets in Martinez. Shell also donated money for the Hospice Tree of Lights on Morello Avenue north of Arnold.
Gifts and Food for the Less Fortunate
Shell is donating $2,500 to the annual “Christmas for Everyone” program, which serves meals and gives gifts to nearly 3,000 needy families in the local area. Refinery employees have adopted more than 230 “Angels” through the “Adopt an Angel” program of the Volunteer Emergency Services Team in Action (VESTIA). Angels represent needy children and families throughout the county who receive toys and clothing during the holidays. Also, the Shell Alumni Association held their annual “Toys for Tots” luncheon in November, collecting many toys at the Shell Clubhouse for children who would not otherwise have them. The Shell Martinez Catalyst plant is once again doing its annual “Christmas for Everyone” bicycle drive.
Once again, Shell is partnering with the Martinez Kiwanis Club for their annual warm coat drive and will be collecting coats at the refinery throughout the month of December for those in need. Shell volunteers are also wrapping gifts at the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, and they have wrapped food barrels for the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, as well as sorting food there.
